As we all know by now, sustainability is a culture that had taken over as a lifestyle in the recent years. This is due to the recent outburst on degradation, the negative impacts of capitalism as seen through the class systems and changes in the ecosystem. Fashion being one of the most vibrant industries that is fast growing and provides for the livelihoods of several people around the globe. This decade has had an evolution where brands have been forced to adapt eco friendly production techniques of operation.  Companies have had to adjust to more sustainable ways of production and supply.

As the name suggests, this brand that was founded in 1991 on the basic principles of fair trade and transparency. From the get go, the company was determined to alleviate the negative impact of fashion. This brand was responsible in pioneering world Fair trade Organisation by getting certified as a Fair Trade affiliated brand. This is really impressive as at this time, humans had not developed any environmental cautiousness. The brand continues to be the sustainable in it trade by:

In french, Amour Vert translates as Green love to English. This brand has lived up to its expectations as suggests the name. The company is aimed at making every single part of their production sustainable. What stood out for me with this brand is the fact that;

  • With every purchase made on a T-shirts, a tree in North America is planted. This to me is very interesting because, it is like a fair trade to the environment that enables us extract cotton and other raw material.
  • They intentionally limit production to avoid waste. This is an amazing strategy as it avoids problems of dead stock and misuse if resources.
  • They are transparent as they show us where and how they produce and who produces what. This is good as is ensure fair trade.
  • The brand makes its own organic fabrics like Mulberry Silk, Ethical wool, Tencel, Organic cotton etc. This to me is walking your own talk.

3. Able Website

Also known as fashionable, this brand is a small one based in Nashville USA. The brand prides itself in being setup to end the generational cycle of poverty among women and communities. Out of 86 employees in this company, 83 are female. This aspect to me is important as women play a big role in socio-economics of the world. When a woman is financially independent, the health is better, family is better and society is safe and happy. This brand see the need to empower women by upholding the different talents that women have and combining the effort to make a positive change by ending generational poverty. To me this is the highest level of Corporate Social Responsibility.

  • The brand works with talents from all over the world, connecting working women to supply chains.
  • Most of the products from this brand are handmade which reduced over productions.
  • The brand works with poor communities to enable the women earn an income, for example many communities in Ethiopia have been aided by employing the talented women and creating a market for their goods.
  • The brand has made the products affordable to make sure there is no dead stock.

4. Thred up Website

This is a bit different from the above because this is a website to buy and sell used clothes. They have taken sustainability to a whole new level. What makes this sustainable is:

  • Up cycling the old clothes and making them available for those that need them, this reduces the waste problem.
  • The clothes are affordable, in case u need anything you always find it for less that 10$. To me that is very sustainable as it ensures fair trade and transparency.

5. KOTN Website

As the name of the brand, their specialty is organic cotton grown and produced in Egypt. I was inspired by this brand as it has made a whole family basing on cotton production. What amazed me is the fact that they have created their own community using cotton as their connection, they have connected with the environment. The main points that make this brand sustainable are:

  • They use organic cotton, where they are not using toxic pesticides.
  • They are transparent as they walk you through the process of cotton extraction as well as milling.
  • They had a loud voice in reducing child labour in Egypt.
  • They have a good C.S.R policy as it involves the entire community, they even built a school for their community.
  • The cotton fabrics are relatively affordable.

In conclusion, there are numerous eco friendly brands out there, I wrote about these to show the different angles of sustainability that other individuals and companies can adapt to improve their eco friendliness. The above brands stood out for me out of the many due to their unique features and principles.
